University of Redlands Champions Community Engagement Through Service Learning

Innovative programs empower students to connect education with meaningful community impact

The University of Redlands is redefining education by integrating community service into its academic framework, fostering a culture where students apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.

Through the Office of Community Service Learning (CSL), students engage in internships with local nonprofits and schools, addressing societal issues while enhancing their personal and professional growth. These experiences allow students to choose their service focus, location, and purpose, transforming theoretical learning into tangible community contributions.

One student shared, "We learned about different nonprofits—how they started, how volunteering works, and how they support their community." Another reflected on their role at the Great Y Circus, stating, "I had the opportunity to train many individuals on how to build their strength and technique and how to cooperate well with their peers."

Recognizing the link between well-being and academic success, the university offers the Food Support Pantry (SFSP) to assist students facing food insecurities. Located on the north side of North Hall, the pantry provides canned goods, non-perishable items, and fresh produce from the university's sustainable farm. This resource operates Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., ensuring students have access to nutritious food without barriers.

The Volunteer Center, situated on the first floor of the Hunsaker University Center, serves as a hub for students, clubs, and organizations seeking service opportunities. Open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the center connects the university community with ongoing projects both on campus and in the broader Redlands area.

Emphasizing sustainability, the university's Sustainable University of Redlands Farm (S.U.R.F) adheres to organic practices like crop rotation, companion planting, and composting. Students actively participate in maintaining the farm, with its produce sold to campus food services or donated to local food distribution programs. This initiative underscores the university's commitment to environmental stewardship and community support.

For those interested in mentoring, CSL offers programs pairing university students with local youth aged 5-18. These initiatives provide mentorship, homework assistance, and special events, fostering meaningful connections and positive influences on younger community members.

In recent developments, the university hosted the International Green Industry Hall of Fame event and the Green Future Forum at the Johnston Center. These events brought together students, academicians, and sustainability experts to discuss pressing environmental issues and honor organizations making significant contributions to ecological sustainability.

Through these comprehensive programs, the University of Redlands exemplifies how integrating education with community service cultivates a generation of students dedicated to making a positive impact both locally and globally.
